CALL NOW (541) 685-1288
LGBT and Family Law
Since 2014, same sex marriage has been legally enforceable in Oregon. Oregon also recognizes same-sex marriages of couples in other states.  Same sex couples must go through the same process to dissolve the marriage as opposite sex couples. If you are in a same-sex marriage in Oregon and wish to divorce, our attorneys can provide the knowledge and experience you need to help you protect your property and parenting rights.

Domestic Partnerships

Domestic Partnership
Since 2008, same sex couples in Oregon that wish to become domestic partners can register a domestic partnership with their county clerk. A domestic partnership is a civil contract entered into between two competent individuals of the same sex who are at least 18 years of age.  Opposite sex couples cannot register under Oregon’s domestic partnership law. The parties cannot already be registered, married, or in a civil union at the time they register for the domestic partnership.

Domestic Partnership vs. Same Sex Marriage
Oregon domestic partnerships differ from same sex marriages in that they are not federally recognized, do not receive recognition in other states, and require residency of only one partner.  It may not be advisable to register a domestic partnership if one or both partners receives public assistance, are in the U.S. on nonimmigrant visas, or do not want to go through the legal process of dissolution to terminate the domestic partnership.
