Bryan Boender is a trial lawyer with jury trial experience in federal, state, and municipal courts. Bryan’s practice is focused on criminal defense, personal injury, and defending student conduct code cases. Bryan is also dedicated to issues involving veterans’ legal rights.

As a criminal defense lawyer, Bryan has represented those accused of major felonies, misdemeanor offenses, and cases of drunk or drugged driving (DUIII). That experience includes complex criminal defense, such as homicides, sex crimes, domestic violence, “Measure 11” offenses and death penalty defense. Bryan began his criminal defense career at Public Defender Services of Lane County, Inc., where he clerked for two years during law school. After entering private practice, the theme of Bryan’s early practice was a “public interest attorney in private practice” because of his focus on civil rights and indigent defense.

Bryan practices student conduct defense. Bryan is experienced with student disciplinary proceedings at Oregon’s colleges and universities. He represents college and university students accused of violating student discipline rules and conduct code offenses. Bryan has found that student conduct cases often also involve criminal charges. In addition to academic misconduct cases, Bryan has represented students facing the most serious conduct code violations, such as Title IX violations involving sexual harassment, sexual misconduct and sexual violence.

Bryan is a combat veteran. He served more than four years of active duty with the U.S. Army. As an airborne infantryman, Bryan was a paratrooper with the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Bryan served a fifteen-month tour to Afghanistan, when the 508th was sent to Afghanistan as part of the Division’s Fourth Brigade Combat Team during Operation Enduring Freedom VII-VIII. During law school, Bryan continued to serve part time in the Oregon Army National Guard. As a JAG Certified Law Clerk, Bryan prosecuted military justice violations in administrative separation hearings.

Veterans’ issues remain very important to Bryan. He is a founder of the first Free Legal Clinic for Veterans in Oregon, a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the non-profit law firm Access the Law, the clinic has provided free legal services to more than 700 veterans since it was first established. The Clinic is still held monthly in Eugene, Oregon at the V.A.’s downtown location.

Bryan earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) from the University of Oregon in 2012. He also holds certificates of completion in the Criminal Practice Program, the Pro Bono Law Program, and the Public Interest Public Service Law Program. The Nicole Richardson Outstanding Pro Bono Service Award recognized Bryan’s pro bono work during law school. And at graduation, the students elected him to serve as the class commencement speaker. The Pat Tillman Foundation honored Bryan by selecting him as a Tillman Military Scholar.

Bryan continues to participate in focused criminal defense training. He has completed the National Criminal Defense College held at Mercer Law School in Macon, GA. Bryan also completed the National College of Capital Voir Dire held at the University of Colorado Law School. In addition, Bryan has published written materials and presented training on the topic of military records, the Privacy Act, FOIA, and Touhy regulations as applied to criminal defense.

In addition to his law degree, Bryan earned his master’s degree (M.S.) in public policy from Rutgers University in 2000. At Rutgers, Bryan was named an Eagleton Fellow to the Eagleton Institute of Politics. Bryan’s bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from Seattle University was finished in 1998. As a college student, Bryan worked his way through college and completed his undergraduate degree in four years.

Bryan lives in Eugene with his wife Amanda. She is also a practicing attorney.
